Nestel Biosecure Traps
The Nestel BiosecureTM trap is a modified McPhail-type traps, designed primarily for biosecurity and low-prevalence situations where early detection of the presence of fruit flies can be used to trigger management actions. These traps were originally developed in a European Union Horizon project (FF-IPM) and subsequently enhanced to make them more durable in a commercial orchard setting.
These traps can be set for a whole season, depending on the lure you select. Each day, the trap captures a high resolution image of a yellow sticky card, sending the image to a cloud computing platform. The advanced machine learning algorithm recognises Ceratitis capitata and Bactrocera spp., and is presently being trained for Anastrepha spp.
Trap catch results are available via a dashboard showing the trap catch as a map or a graph at a single location. Where available, graphs of climate suitability assist in making management decisions.
In biosecurity, area freedom or area of low pest prevalence settings, traceability is critically important. The GPS chip and the use of QR codes helps confirm the veracity of the collected data.
